I am a teenager how do I get my California Learner's Permit?
To obtain the California Learner’s Permit, you must be at least 15 1/2, but under 18 years of age and have completed a DMV approved Driver Education. We offer this course on our website at www.rondrivingschool.com
How does the student receive the certificate once they complete the Driver Ed course?
The DMV Certificate of Driver Education (pink slip) will be mailed.
What do I do after I complete the Driver Education Course?
You will need to make a DMV appointment. Please visit the DMV website at www.dmv.ca.gov. You can also call or apply in person.
Do I have to bring anything to the DMV to take the Learner’s Permit?
Yes. You must bring the following ORIGINAL documents listed below. Also, you need to complete the electronic application DL44 application for your permit by visiting the DMV website at eDLapp.DMV.ca.org
- Driver Education Certificate of completion (DL 400C)
- 2 proofs of your parents residency (i.e. water bill, electric bill)
- Original Birth Certificate
- SS#
- $37 DMV fee

I just passed my California Learner’s Permit, can I start driving now?
No. Your permit is not valid unless you start the first 2 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed Driving Instructor. You must enroll the 6 total hours to complete the requirements. After the first lesson with a professional Driving Instructor, you are now allowed to drive or practice with someone 25 years or older with a valid Driver License.
How long do I have to wait from the day I got my permit to the day I can take my DMV Driving Test?
Aside from the 6 hours Drivers Training with a licensed Driving Instructor, you must be practicing with supervision a total of 50 hours (10 hours night driving) for 6 months before you can take your Driving Test. There are no exceptions unless you turn 18 years old.
After completing all the requirements, what do I need to bring to the DMV for my Driving Test?
You must bring the Completion of the 6 hours Driver Training Certificate issued to you on your 3rd lesson by your Driving Instructor. Failure to provide this at the DMV will result of cancelling your Driving Test appointment.
What to do if I lost or damage my learner's permit?
In the event that the learner’s permit is lost or destroyed. You need to go to the DMV to get a replacement.
Will other students be in the car with me?
There will be no other students in the car during driving lessons. All of Ron’s Driving School’s Behind Training is done through one-on-one private lessons. Driving Instructor will NOT allow parent or guardians observers in the car during training.
Where will I take my lessons?
Your instructor will pick you up and drop you off at your home or other previously arranged location (e.g. school, work,) within the service area.
What will the each lesson cover?
Your lessons will cover the basics and advance driving such as freeways, city traffic, residential neighborhoods, hills, intersections and one-way streets. The instructor will do an assessment what training you need for each appointment. The 3rd lesson is usually to prepare you for your Driving Test.
Do I need proof of insurance?
While you’re driving the Driving School’s vehicle, you’ll be covered by our insurance.
What are the Restrictions for Teen Learner’s Permit?
If you are under 18, you cannot drive between the hours of 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM, not transporting anyone under 20 years old unless accompanied with a licensed driver 25 years of age or older.
How do I schedule my Driver Training Appointments? Can I schedule all 3 lessons right away?
We schedule 1 appointment at time (2 hrs each) since it is a 6 months process for Teens to be eligible to take Driving Test. You have to call our office M-F 12pm-6pm to schedule the lesson. Our Drivers Training is 7 days a week.
I am over 18 (adult) and I need my license. Do I still need to get a Learner’s Permit?
Yes. You must have a Learner’s Permit to practice driving. An instruction permit does not permit you to drive by yourself. You must be accompanied with someone 18 years old and has a valid Driver License.
Are you licensed, insured and bonded?
Ron’s Driving School is fully insured, licensed and bonded company by the California DMV. We have been operating the business since 1987.
Can I rent a car to take my DMV Driver Test?
No. The the rental companies require people to be 25 years of age or older and with a valid driver’s license to rent a car. Therefore, you will not be able to use a rental car for the Driver Test. However, you have the option to purchase our 2 hour Drive Test Assistance. The Driving Instructor will help you prepare and assist you to the entire process of your Driving Test.
*You must have previously enrolled at least 2 hours of Driver Training for our Instructor to bring you to the DMV Test.
What is your refund and service policies?
- For Special Packages, there are no refunds after taking the first 2 hours of Drivers Training.
- Drivers Ed Online Course and 6 Hours Training Package EXPIRES 1 year from the date of purchase. Full payment is required upon enrollment.
- Drivers Ed online expires 1 year from the date of purchase.
- 6 hours Drivers Training and Special Packages are non-refundable or transferrable.
Cancellations
- We require notice of 48 hours in advance for appointment cancellations. Same day cancellation or less than 48 hours will result in a $45 cancellation fee. We will not schedule any appointments unless cancellation fee is paid. Students must call the office to re-schedule or cancel the lesson during business hours. If the voicemail picks up, please leave a message with name of student, contact number, and the date/time of the scheduled lesson.
- No Show or failing to bring a current learner’s permit and cancellations due to school and work related activities with be charged.
- We will postpone the lesson in the event that the student is sick, drunk, and on medication that affects the ability to control the car and the ability to focus. In such circumstances the lesson will be forfeited and there is no refund.
- Notify our office of any change of address or phone numbers.
Driving Lessons
Our Behind-the-wheel driving lessons on a first-come-first-service basis. Student must carry a valid Learner’s Permit to schedule a lesson.
The instructor will or may make suggestions as to when the training should be scheduled. We will not guarantee accommodation for students who will call last minute or few weeks to schedule ALL 3 lessons before the Driving Test. We require enough notice to schedule each lesson since Teen Drivers Training is a 6 months process. Teens under 18 years old are required by DMV to complete 6 hours Driving Lessons. We complete the lessons by scheduling 2 hours each appointment (3 appointments total). Completion Certificate of the 6 hours Drivers Training is issued after the 3rd appointment. $20 fee for missing or lost certificates.
We need to know in advance if there are any medical/and/or learning conditions that could affect the student’s driving.
Rain or Shine and Evening Appointments
We will not cancel or postpone the lesson in the event of rain showers, in fact this would be a good opportunity for students to learn important issues while driving in in the rain. Of course our Instructor will use their best judgement and will postpone the lesson if it is not safe or become dangerous. In the event of postponement, we will reschedule the lesson or the remaining time will be carried forward to the next lesson. That also applies with evening appointment during winter time 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm is already dark. We assure you that driving during winter times at night could also mean an opportunity for student to learn how to deal with more complex traffic situation.
Refund and Expiration Date
